Road House (1989) Movie review – The film the critics love to hate

Every so often I will read a list of the worst movies from certain decades or just generally bad movie lists.

Road House seems to be on these list’s a lot, which I find strange,I really enjoyed the phenomenon that was Swayze, for the girls growing up they had Dirty Dancing,us guys had Road House.

The movie is about a bouncer named Dalton,in no way does he look like a bouncer,or act like a bouncer, but he does beam coolness to levels not seen since James Dean.

This is not an Oscar deserving movie, mainly due to its cheesy over tones but it does have the interesting cliche characters played by some good actors.

(Kelly Lynch),famous for Cocktail and Curly Sue plays Swayze’s attractive girlfriend who fights with her own moral feelings towards her new partner, not to mention a sex scene which includes Swayze picking up his lady, her feet remain on the floor due to the embarrassing height difference.

(Sam Elliot),If Swayze is cool,Wade Garrett created the term cool,he plays the elder, more experienced bouncer, known as a legend in the business,I don’t think I have enjoyed Sam Elliot more in any other movie.

Brad Wesley (Ben Gazzara) This bad guy is original,he is a millionaire, who runs the town and gets a kick out of the fear he supplies to HIS town, rather than fear what he could physically do to his enemy, this guy intimidates people with his power and connections.

All of this is topped off with an amazing soundtrack, which includes the Jeff Healey band, who perform in the movie as the bar band.

The film critics can pan this movie as much as they like,it still goes down as boys classic in my eyes.

Famous quotes –

Morgan: What am I supposed to do? Dalton: There’s always barber college.

Emmett: Calling me sir is like putting an elevator in an outhouse. It don’t belong.

Dalton: I want you to be nice until it’s time to not be nice.

Frank Tilghman: I thought you’d be bigger.
